Mishaps at the YMCA

It’s January 2, 2019, so the YMCA parking lot was packed to the gills today ….all those New Year’s resolutions!

I try to get to the Y three times a week for the deep water exercise class. We have a great time doing the “flutter,” water “jogging” and “cross-country skiing.” The belts we wear keep us afloat while golden oldies like “Honeycomb” and “Sixteen Tons” play through the speakers. (Remember the old Hit Parade TV show? That was in the 1950s!)

My health insurance premiums include a “Silver and Fit” YMCA membership, so I would be foolish not to take advantage of it. Of course, sometimes the idea of driving to the pool at 8:00 a.m. isn’t that attractive….but I keep plugging away.

There have been a few locker room mishaps, but nothing I can’t deal with. So what if I forgot my underwear one time? I just got as dry as I could before sloshing out to the car with my sweatpants over my suit. Placed a folded towel on the driver’s seat and away I went…straight home. No errands that day.

I can’t wait for the day I forget my locker combination. So far so good.

Chlorine is hard on swimsuits, so I have three that I rotate. I recently had to purchase a new “tankini” top to go with my skirt bottom. The top has something called a “racerback.”

I got it on just fine, but in the shower I had to take it off. Panic started to rise as I tried to pull it over my head. Have you tried pulling on a wet suit? I yanked at the front and grabbed at the back. I bent over and pulled up from the bottom. I managed to get it about halfway off, but then I was stuck with my arms straight out in a diving position and the “tankini” twisted around my shoulders. I knew what was coming.

“Help! I am trapped in my swimsuit and I can’t get out!”

How humiliating it would be to have a fellow swimmer yanking and pulling while my whole upper body was flopping naked.

Finally, I got the thing off by myself and tried to breathe normally.

Obviously, this suit will take a little practice. But I know I can do it. My New Year’s resolution for 2019 is to take risks and try new things.

How about you? Do you make resolutions?
